James Ewing

Bio

James A. Ewing is a Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the law school’s new Prosecution Clinic. Professor Ewing served for nearly 15 years as an Assistant United States Attorney in both the District of Columbia and the Northern District of Ohio, where he served as Appellate Chief until 2025. He has prosecuted hundreds of trial-level matters ranging from misdemeanors to violent felonies, and has handled criminal appeals in the D.C. Court of Appeals as well as the United States Courts of Appeal for the District of Columbia and Sixth Circuits. A recognized authority on prosecutorial ethics, Professor Ewing served in a nationwide advisory role with the Department of Justice's Professional Responsibility Advisory Office (PRAO), where he advised Department attorneys on their professional conduct obligations.

Professor Ewing also served in the U.S. Army on active duty and in the reserves, retiring as a Colonel in 2026. His Army Reserve service includes five years as a Military Trial Judge and seven years as an Associate Judge on the Army Court of Criminal Appeals, the Army's highest court. Before joining the Department of Justice, Professor Ewing served on active duty with the United States Army, with service in Afghanistan, South Korea, and Italy. Commissioned as an Army officer following his graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Professor Ewing served as a Field Artillery officer and paratrooper prior to joining the JAG Corps. His active Army JAG experience includes nearly four years as a criminal defense attorney.
