Milena Sterio

BIO

Milena Sterio is the Baker C. Hostetler- BakerHostetler Professor of Law and the Cleveland State University Distinguished Professor at the Cleveland State University College of Law. She is also Managing Director at the Public International Law and Policy Group (PILPG). She specializes in International Law, International Criminal Law, Human Rights and Transitional Justice. The is the author of ten books and numerous law review articles and other writings. Her scholarship has been widely cited by federal courts and other scholars, and she has presented at conferences and academic venues across the globe and the United States. She holds leadership positions at the American Society of International Law, the American Branch of the International Law Association, the International Penal Law Association, and the American Association of Law Schools. Professor Sterio has testified before the U.S. Department of State Foreign Relations Committee, has present ed at the United Nations, and has participated in ICC proceedings as an amicus expert. She has also engaged with the ICC Office of the Prosecutor where she has provided advice and expertise on prosecuting the crime of gender persecution, and on prosecuting environmental crimes. In addition, she has organized and led trainings for judges and prosecutors in Ukraine, Kenya, The Seychelles and Mauritius on various topics of international law. She was also a Fulbright scholar in Azerbaijan in 2013. Before entering academia, she practiced law at the New York and Paris offices of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. She holds law degrees from Cornell University and the University of Paris I- Pantheon-Sorbonne, and she is fluent in English, French, Serbo-Croatian and Italian.
