On Wednesday, Cleveland State University College of Law announced that it is offering students a Fundamentals of Prompt Engineering for Lawyers certificate program in partnership with legal training provider AltaClaro.
The optional certificate program dives into the basics of prompt engineering for lawyers using generative artificial intelligence and covers topics including verification and professional judgment for AI-assisted legal workflows as well as AI’s limitations in the legal practice.
“It became evident to us early on that this technology is something that lawyers are going to need to use. ... All of our students needed to have a baseline understanding and competency to use these tools effectively and responsibly,” Brian Ray, cointerim dean at CSU College of Law, told Legaltech News.
The course is being taught this year during the school’s winter session, starting this month with 130 students, and due to high demand, the university also plans to offer the course during spring break and in the early summer term.
Through the program, AltaClaro provides participants with interactive video tutorials, and what they learn is then put into practice through various exercises with gen AI tools. They are then asked to complete an assignment and receive tailored feedback in a live session with a legal professional.
“We're actively looking at the possibility of requiring this or incorporating into a required course that already exists because our ultimate goal is to be able to say to an employer that any student that graduates from CSU, they know are prepared and have been trained in the same way that their professionals are being trained to use these important tools,” Ray added.
CSU College of Law decided to partner with AltaClaro as the company provides training services to a number of firms in the Am Law 200.
