Justin Hayman joins CSU Law as a Visiting Legal Writing Professor after nearly a decade in private practice. Professor Hayman teaches first-year Legal Writing I/II and Advanced Brief Writing, with a focus on clear analysis, disciplined structure, persuasive advocacy, and the practical judgment required of effective lawyers.
Professor Hayman's pedagogy draws on his experience in judicial chambers, appellate advocacy, and high-stakes motion practice. He is especially interested in the future of legal writing, including the thoughtful use of generative AI as a tool for sharpening - not replacing - lawyerly thinking.
Outside the classroom, Professor Hayman enjoys performing music, sailing on Lake Erie, and spending time with his wife, son, and rescue dog. He remains a persistent believer that most legal writing problems can be improved through clearer issue framing, better topic and conclusion sentences, and a healthy skepticism of block quotes.
