Under the direct supervision of the Director, students will provide legal representation directly to clients seeking exoneration, a new trial, or a reduced sentence based on constitutional or other legal errors in their original conviction and/or sentence. These representative services include the following: conducting client interviews; conducting a legal assessment of potential claims and avenues for post-conviction relief, including researching possible procedural bars and whether they can be overcome; conducting legal research and drafting motions, petitions, appellate briefs, and related legal documents for filing; conducting fact research related to the client's claims; preparing for, and potentially representing clients at, hearings or other post-conviction proceedings; advocating for the client in various ways, from advocacy to government officials (such as the prosecutor's office) to generating community support. This is a two-semester clinic. Students must enroll in both Fall and Spring. This course counts toward the credits needed to satisfy the Experiential Skills requirement.
