“The value of an idea lies in the using of it.” - Thomas Edison

“For good ideas and true innovation, you need human interaction, conflict, argument, debate.” -Margaret Heffernan

 Last Friday in October

Please join us this Friday, October 29, 2021 virtually, 9:30am-4pm, for the Cleveland-Marshall IP+ Conference on Innovation Law, Intellectual Property, Business, and Emerging Technology.

The event, which will take place by Zoom, will feature a keynote from Judge Kathleen O’Malley of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. (On a personal note, Judge O’ Malley served as my Chief Counsel and Chief of Staff when I served as Ohio Attorney General. I’m not objective, but I think Judge O’Malley is the best federal appellate judge in the country!)

Our Conference has been organized by Professor Christa Laser, the C|M|LAW IP Advisory Council, chaired by John Cipolla ’89 (Calfee), the Cleveland State Law Review (Nathan Hill, Editor-in-Chief, 3L) and the Intellectual Property & Technology Association (Lydia Fawzy, President, 3L).

We have an incredible lineup of topics that you won’t find at other IP conferences around the country: what keeps general counsels up at night about innovation, intellectual property monetization, the law of emerging technology such as blockchain, mRNA technology, and artificial intelligence, and an academic perspective. Speakers will include Nona Lee (Arizona Diamondbacks), Ann Aber (Joann Stores), Ed Gecovich (Surgical Theatre), Lisa Kunkle (Avient) (member of the Cleveland State University Board of Trustees), Jonathan Leiken (Diebold Nixdorf), and Georgia Yanchar (MRI Software).

The Conference is designed for a broad audience. The cost is $99 for lawyers seeking CLE credit (5 credit hours), and free for those not seeking credit, including students. The event will be styled as a Zoom meeting to enable closer audience participation rather than a webinar format.

Registration is required. You can learn more about the IP+ Symposium, view the agenda, and register here: IP+ The National Non-IP IP Conference: Innovation Law, Intellectual Property, Emerging Tech, and Business | Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (csuohio.edu).

Special thanks to our generous Sponsors: Benesch, Renner Otto, and John Cipolla ’89 (Calfee).

First Friday in November

Please join us on the first Friday in November - November 5, 5:30pm - for our 4th Annual C|M|LAW Hall of Fame Celebration honoring our 2021 C|M|LAW Hall of Fame Honorees and our 2021 Leader on the RiseKimberly Kendall Corral '12.

Our 2021 Hall of Fame Inductees have carried the torch of our mission and have made it burn brightly. They have used their voices and their knowledge of the law to make real change and to make a real difference.

The November 5 Hall of Fame event gives us the opportunity not only to honor our distinguished honorees but also to raise much-needed funds for scholarships for first year students admitted to our Fall 2021 class. The Hall of Fame celebration is the only annual fundraising event sponsored by the law school. For a number of our students, a scholarship makes the difference between getting a legal education or sacrificing their dream. This is our single best opportunity to raise funds for much-needed student scholarships.

Please make a contribution or pledge this week to our November 5 Hall of Fame celebration of an amount ranging from $120 to $12,000. This year’s event will be virtual, and if you make a contribution for the event, we will send you the Zoom link a few days before the celebration.

Please visit csulaw.org/hof_registration to purchase tickets, sponsorships, or an ad in our program book in honor of one or more of the 2021 inductees, or to just donate to the Hall of Fame, text JUSTICE to 216-400-5145.

If you have any questions about the Hall of Fame, please do not hesitate to contact me, Ellen GreveyAssistant Dean for Advancement (e.greveynull@csuohio.nulledu), Amy Miller, Director of Donor/Alumni Relations (a.l.miller86null@csuohio.nulledu), or Ashley PresuttoAssistant Director of Advancement (a.presuttonull@csuohio.nulledu).

Again, congratulations to our 2021 inductees! Registration is now open to attend and/or sponsor the 2021 Induction Celebration.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay Committed to Living Justice.

Have a great day. Have a great week.
