Monday Morning Message 1.22.2018: "The Lighting of a Fire"

Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” – William Butler Yeats

“I am not a teacher, but an awakener.” – Robert Frost

Not a week goes by without my receiving positive emails and notes from students, alumni, and community leaders about our outstanding Cleveland-Marshall faculty and staff. I enjoy sharing some of them from time to time.

From Our Current Students

“My wife and I are very happy with our decision to join the C|M|LAW Family. My professors this semester, Dean Borden, Professors Weinstein, Glassman, Broering-Jacobs, and DeSantis were all phenomenal. They truly cared about my academic success and my family.”

Professor Garlock, I enjoyed your class and am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from you. Your class not only gave me an understanding of torts, but also taught me how to analyze and ‘think like a lawyer.’ I believe your instruction has set me on a path for success in law school and beyond.”

Professor Borden, I wanted to thank you for all of your efforts as one of my mentors. I appreciate your advice and encouragement both inside and outside the classroom. Your dedication to the student body and its individual members personalizes the law school experience.”

“Now that I have finished my first semester at Cleveland-Marshall, I must say that transferring was one of the best decisions I made in 2017. The Cleveland-Marshall experience has opened my eyes to so many opportunities that were never on my radar. During this past semester, I have decided to focus my JD in cybersecurity, and I hope to be able to add the Master’s Program in Information Systems through the business school. I would never have considered these options had I not had classes with Professor Ian Friedman and Professor Brian Ray….I couldn’t be happier to be a student at Cleveland-Marshall.”

From our Alumni

“Thank you for the support the law clinic provides to Equality Ohio and for your thoughtfulness in featuring it in a major publication for the school…..one of the many ways our students "learn law" and "live justice" as part of their education.” -Alana Jochum ‘10, Executive Director, Equality Ohio

“ Professor Weinstein, I want to thank you for a very lively and useful Intro to US Law class, which I very much enjoyed.” Jesus A. Gonzalez, LL.M.‘17

Professor Geier - thanks in large part to the human capital you helped create in my brain… I'll be starting as the General Counsel for a growing CPA firm in greater Columbus in January. I couldn't be more grateful and would just like to express my sincere appreciation for everything you taught me.” -Cory Hoffman ‘11

“I manage a handful of students and recent grads, and we do civil litigation. They don’t understanhow to apply the first year curriculum. Clinical experience is what makes the difference. I give preference to applicants who have taken clinics in hiring. The Civil Litigation Clinic at Cleveland-Marshallis the jewel of our law school.” – Anonymous

“Ashley (Ashley Jones, Coordinator of the C|M|LAW Solo Incubator), I can’t say enough things about you. I feel that you are essential to this program. Your confidence in yourself and in the incubator gave me the confidence in myself to start something I am so proud of. That confidence in turn has inspired a few other folks to hang out their shingles too. Your unique experience as a solo practitioner is essential and frankly contagious. Not to mention you know every person alive. Your connections were vital in helping me get off the ground and in making life-long relationships with other attorneys. Professor Sagers was also an advocate for us and always very responsive when issues arose.” - Melissa Gawelek ‘13

From a Community Leader

“I just wanted to thank you for hosting my Hawken In Pursuit of Justice class during December. They had an incredible experience preparing for and putting on a moot court at Cleveland Marshall….It was inspiring for them to hear from you about the role of Cleveland-Marshall in the development of our system of justice and training of future leaders.” – Dean Julie Agar, Hawken School History Teacher

At Cleveland-Marshall, we inspire, we awaken, we light fires.

Have a great week.
