“Today’s crisis in democracy has brought us back to the same question that haunted the Founders: are the principles on which this nation was founded viable? Is it really possible to create a country in which everyone is equal before the law and entitled to have a say in their government, or are some people better than others and thus have the right- and the duty – to rule? ” - Heather Cox Richardson, Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America
Throughout this 2024 presidential election year, when divisions in our country run deep, we will bring in speakers who present diverse views on political and social issues.
Our students are studying the law and our graduates are entering the legal profession at a moment when some of our most cherished values as
Americans are at a crossroads: civility, decency, democracy, and justice. So the common thread of our programs will be our need for civil discourse, our responsibility to defend democracy, and the enduring value of free speech.
One of those speakers will join us this Wednesday, March 6, 12 noon in our Moot Court Room – historian Heather Cox Richardson, author of Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America.

Please join us for a conversation about her views on democracy and its complex historical underpinnings. As she describes her book, it is “the story of how democracy has persisted throughout our history despite the many attempts to undermine it.” Her daily newsletter, Letters from an American , which synthesizes history and modern political issues, has over one million subscribers.
Have a great day. Have a great week.
