Monday Morning Message 4.16.2018: “Bridging the Gap Between Law School and the World”

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin

We are a law school that ensures that our students are practice-ready. Our excellent Civil Litigation, Transactional, and Community Advocacy Clinics connect our students with the practice of law in creative ways that allow us to use the city and the courts as our classroom.

There are many examples, but below is just a brief glimpse into last week in our Civil Litigation Clinic.

Last week our students:

  • Won a Civil Stalking Protection Order at a hearing in Common Pleas Court.
  • Represented a client at an unemployment compensation hearing before a state Hearing Officer.
  • Presented oral argument on behalf of a client in the Ohio Eighth District Court of Appeals.
  • Negotiated settlements in a simulation based on an actual past Clinic case.
  • Drafted a brief to oppose a Motion for Reconsideration in a case we won in the Court of Appeals.

That is a typical week in just one of our clinics….

Recently, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit held the termination of an employee because of her transgender status was in violation of civil rights laws. The Court cited an amicus brief on behalf of Equality Ohio, co-authored by our clinic students and Professors Doron KalirMatthew Green, Kenneth Kowalski, and Carolyn Broering-Jacobs.

Here is what an alumna recently wrote to Professors Kenneth Kowalski and Doron Kalir:

Professors - I wanted to let you know I went to court for the first time unassisted this week! It was only a case management conference for a civil case, but still. The opposing attorney, Judge, and I met in the Judge's chambers. I think the opposing attorney underestimated me, and I made a good first impression on the Judge. There is no question that I felt more competent and less nervous thanks to my experience in your Clinic... As valuable as I thought the Clinic was at the time, it is proving to be even more so.

We are a law school without walls. We often use the city as our classroom. Our exceptionally wide, loyal alumni network and strong community partnerships provide exceptional opportunities for our legal clinics, symposia, and guest lectures, and our students’ internships, jobs, and careers.

Have a great week.
