Pursuing your dreams is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t.” – Anonymous
“Get ready to embark on a wild ride unlike anything you’ve ever experienced, packed with thrills, chills, and probably a few spills. Being a 1L will challenge you like you’ve never been challenged….. The first year of law school will be one of hardest years of your life. Law school will profoundly alter the way you think, and view and interact with the world around you. Your 1L experience will change who you are, whether you want it to or not. “ Andrew McClurg, 1L of a Ride, A Well-Traveled Professor's Roadmap to Success in the First Year of Law School
We are excited that our first year class (C|M|LAW Class of 2020) will be arriving on August 15 for orientation. Many already have arrived because they chose to participate in our new July C|M|LAW Jump Start program designed to introduce first year students to law school and offer basic skills instruction.
I am preparing a handbook for our first year students, “What I Wish I Had Known My First Year of Law School,” and I need your help. I am asking our alumni, current and emeritus full-time and adjunct faculty, staff, and students to send me “1L tips” by July 25 that we can include in our first edition. The subject of your email should be “1L Tips.”
You can send as few or as many tips as you want, but please limit each tip to no more than 2-3 sentences. Unless you indicate that you prefer to be anonymous, each tip will have a byline. All alumni and students who respond should indicate your graduation class year with your name. I reserve the right to ask you to edit your tip or not include it because it is duplicative of other tips or for any other reason.
As an example, below are excerpts from tips from Professor John Plecnik:
“The short-term view is to study hard, achieve high grades and earn honors such as journal membership and moot court awards….The mid-term view is to build your reputation and relationships with your professors….The long-term view is to build a real friendship with your classmates, because they are your colleagues for life.”
In honor of our historic 120th anniversary and our new C|M|Law Inaugural Hall of Fame Celebration on October 19, 2017, 5:30-8pm, please invest in our 120 Scholarship Campaign. Please consider a contribution or pledge today ranging from $120 to $12,000 to $120,000. Please give here: Believe in C|M|LAW. Give Now. or send me an email with your pledge at: lee.fishernull@csuohio.nulledu. Your groundbreaking contribution will be the foundation of our campaign. It would mean a lot to us.
Have a great week.
My best,
Lee
