Career Connect

Monday Morning Message 7.30.2018: “Be a Mentor. Be a Champion.”

“The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.” — Steven Spielberg

“Every wall is a door.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

We tell our students and graduates that “we are your law school for life.” What does that mean?

It means that we are a law school with no back doors, only front doors. We are there for our students from the moment they enter the first front door to their legal education to the moment they enter the second front door to their career.

We open front doors and let the future in.

This morning I am requesting that our alumni and friends support our first-year students at the first front door as C|M|Mentors, and to support our newest graduates at the second front door as C|M|Champions.

All our students and graduates have something in common –they have gone further than they thought they could because someone else thought they could.

Share your Wisdom. Welcome a First-Year Student to C|M|LAW. Be a C|M|Mentor.

We are very fortunate that the Cleveland-Marshall Law Alumni Association (CMLAA) sponsors a mentoring program to support a number of our first-year law students. This long-standing CMLAA program is a unique component of the first-year experience at C|M|LAW. Participating mentors make a measurable difference for students from day one.

For the first time in our history, with the support of the CMLAA, we will match every incoming first-year student with a mentor, offering every student the opportunity to experience the power of our alumni network from the start of their academic career.

To achieve this, we are asking you to volunteer to be a C|M|Mentor. As a mentor, you will be matched with an incoming first-year law student for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Mentors and students will have an opportunity to meet for the first time on Tuesday, September 4, 5:30pm at C|M|LAW.

Conversations between mentors and students will include a wide variety of topics, from academics to careers to professionalism. Mentors will introduce students to the profession and to the C|M|LAW community. At least four mentoring encounters will be scheduled at your convenience with your assigned student. The Mentor Program will provide guidance to help you determine what will be most helpful for your student.

To sign-up as a Mentor, please complete the form here, or email the Office of Career Planning at C|M|LAW atcareernull@law.csuohio.nulledu

Pay it Forward. Open Doors for a Recent Graduate. Be a C|M|Champion.

Our most recent graduates need your help too. Having just taken the July bar examination, they will now turn their focus to securing their first permanent post-graduate job.

You can support these graduates by becoming a C|M|Champion and help launch them into their first job after graduation.

The most obvious assistance is to hire a graduate. Recent graduates will also benefit from a referral to a job opportunity. A referral from you to a colleague for an informational meeting will help a graduate to connect with someone they might not otherwise have the opportunity to meet.

Please consider who you might be able to take for coffee and a networking meeting, who might be a good candidate for someone you know who has a hiring need, or who might be a good addition to your own practice.

To become a C|M Champion, please email the Office of Career Planning at careernull@law.csuohio.nulledu The Office of Career Planning will work directly with you on the best ways that you can assist one recent graduate.

Please choose today to be a C|M|Mentor for one of our first-year students and/or a C|M|Champion for one of our recent graduates.

At some point in each our careers, someone influenced our trajectory. It’s our turn to pay it forward.

By doing so, you will demonstrate to our students and graduates that we are a law school with no back doors – we are their law school for life.

Thank you.

Have a great week.

My best,
Lee
