“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning” -Benjamin Franklin
Breaking News…..This past weekend, Emily Stolfer and DeAngelo LaVette went undefeated in every round to win the Frederick Douglass Moot Court National Championship!
Emily and DeAngelo soundly defeated 18 law school teams from throughout the country including Columbia, Emory, University of Virginia, George Washington, and Texas A&M. Emily and DeAngelo argued the final round in the U.S. District Court and came away with a 6-0 score. Between the regional competition and national competition, DeAngelo and Emily NEVER lost a judge's ballot. In other words, they won every single round at both regionals and nationals (a total of 10 rounds) unanimously!
DeAngelo LaVette is the first law student in the country to compete in the national competition three years in a row. The Moot Court competition national advisor described DeAngelo as the "most decorated competitor in the competition's history."
DeAngelo and Emily undoubtedly had the most creative arguments during the entire competition, as evidenced by the fact that the judges used their arguments as questions to the other competitors. Based on commentary received during the final round, the national advisors of the competition commended DeAngelo and Emily on their ability to think critically and develop arguments that no other competitors had ever considered.
This is the second year in a row that Emily and DeAngelo advanced to the national competition. They placed 4th last year. A few weeks ago,Emily and DeAngelo also won the Midwest Regional Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition and were awarded Best Respondent's Brief.
The C|M|Law team was superbly coached by Brandon Cox '12 and Theo Hudson '12. Professor Browne Lewis is BLSA’s faculty advisor. Brandon Cox noted,“DeAngelo and Emily are two of the hardest working students ever. Their passion, commitment to excellence, and desire to challenge themselves is evident in their historical accomplishment.”
