Monday Morning Message 1.31.22 Pay It Forward
“Thank you very much for this email and your warm voicemail. Thank you, also, for the congratulations. I am thrilled! Your summary of my interests is right on the money, and your career highlights reaffirm my confidence in and excitement about C|M|LAW. C|M|LAW continues to make me feel valued.” -Admitted Student
“I so appreciate that you reached out to me personally. It confirms everything that I have heard from alumni and students about the supportive culture of the law school and its alumni network.” - Admitted Student
Monday Morning Message 1.24.22 What is a Quasquicentennial?
“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“THE PAST IS PROLOGUE.” Inscription over the door of the National Archives in Washington, D.C. “What do you think that means?,” General Eisenhower asked the cabby driving him through the nation’s capital. “ It means,” said the cabby, “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”
Monday Morning Message 1.18.22 "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."
Note: Today’s message is being sent Tuesday morning because yesterday was Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday.
“I just wanted to take a minute and thank you for all the support you have provided me this year. It was your words and encouragement that motivated me to continue this rigorous process despite the struggles of balancing home responsibilities, school, and receiving the disappointing grades of first semester…I will be graduating this spring, Magna Cum Laude. If it was not for your confidence in me and the conversations we had after the first semester, I would not have found the confidence in myself to achieve this goal.…” – 2021 Graduate email to Professor Michael Borden
Monday Morning Message 1.10.22 What's in a Name?
“What’s in a name?” – William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
“For every complex problem, there is a solution that is clear, simple, and wrong.” – H.L. Mencken
“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” – Stephen Covey
This morning, I am writing to remind you to provide feedback on the very important issue of whether our Law School should continue to be named after Chief Justice John Marshall, who, in addition to being the fourth Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, was also a slaveholder.
Monday Morning Message 12.13.21 A Job, Career, or a Calling?
Three bricklayers are asked: “What are you doing?” The first says, “I am laying bricks.” The second says, “I am building a church.” And the third says, “I am building the house of God.” The first bricklayer has a job. The second has a career. The third has a calling.” ― Angela Duckworth
This morning, I’m asking for your help to launch our 2021 graduates who were sworn in as new attorneys last month into successful careers and to help them find their calling.
Employers often tell us that what distinguishes our graduates from other law schools’ graduates is grit and perseverance. It’s the difference between approaching your next chapter as a job, a career, or a calling.
Monday Morning Message 12.6.21 Serenity Prayer for Final Exams
"Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe." -President Abraham Lincoln
"I run on the road long before I dance under the lights." - Muhammad Ali
This morning’s message is to our students, particularly our first-year students.
Final exams begin Wednesday and continue until December 17. You’ve worked hard all semester. You’ve diligently read and briefed your cases, prepared and reviewed your notes and outlines, and practiced your legal analysis on hypotheticals and old exams.
Monday Morning Message 11.29.21 Why Tuesday is Different.
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”– Harriet Tubman
Black Friday. Small Business Saturday. Cyber Monday. All three are primarily about buying. But one day, Giving Tuesday, is all about giving.
Monday Morning Message 11.22.21 Thankful
“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you….” Ralph Waldo Emerson
As Thanksgiving approaches,
I’m thankful for the exceptional perseverance, resilience, and adaptability of our law students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends this past year.
I’m thankful for our talented faculty, students, and staff who come together every day to teach and learn in ways that are collaborative and spirited.
I’m thankful for our law’s school’s daily focus on our mission: To Learn Law and Live Justice.
Monday Morning Message 11.15.21 A New Dawn. A New Day. A New Chapter.
"Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me, and I’m feeling good.” - Nina Simone, 'Feeling Good'
Congratulations to our 2021 graduates who were sworn in as new attorneys last week. For them, it’s a new dawn, a new day, a new chapter.
