Monday Morning Message 9.12.22 Get stronger in your broken places.

“Grief is the price we pay for love.” – Queen Elizabeth II in her message to the American people on September 11, 2001

“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places.”  -Ernest HemingwayA Farewell to Arms

21 years ago yesterday morning our world changed in an instant. It was one of the saddest, darkest, most horrific days in history.

Monday Morning Message 9.6.22 We Open Front Doors and Let the Future In.

“The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.” — Steven Spielberg

“I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.” — Maya Angelou

“I am the first person in my family to graduate from college. So I have not had anyone who could really help me with my law school decision. Your encouragement and insights came just at the right time. I hope to “pay it forward” someday when I am a lawyer by mentoring a future law student!” – Admitted Student

We open front doors and let the future in.

Monday Morning Message 8.29.22 My Favorite Week

“Get ready to embark on a wild ride unlike anything you’ve ever experienced, packed with thrills, chills, and probably a few spills. Being a 1L will challenge you like you’ve never been challenged….. The first year of law school will be one of the hardest years of your life. Law school will profoundly alter the way you think, and view and interact with the world around you. Your 1L experience will change who you are, whether you want it to or not.”  Andrew McClurg, 1L of a Ride, A Well-Traveled Professor's Roadmap to Success in the First Year of Law School

Monday Morning Message 8.22.22 A Message to our First Year Students

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” -Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The voters, the courts, and the states have all spoken…If we overrule them, it would damage our republic forever…. We cannot keep drifting apart into two separate tribes with a separate set of facts and separate realities with nothing in common except our hostility towards each other and mistrust for the few national institutions that we all still share….”  - U. S. Senator Mitch McConnell, January 6, 2022

Monday Morning Message 6.6.22 Just One Request Before Your Email Inbox Gets a Summer Break!

“We need resilience and hope and a spirit that can carry us through the doubt and fear.”– Brené Brown

We are giving your email inbox a summer break! The Monday Morning Message will resume the week of August 22, 2022, the first week of fall semester classes.

As I reflect on the continued injustices in our criminal justice system, the disregard for the rule of law, the lack of civility and basic human decency, and the abject failure of our federal and state governments to find effective ways to address senseless gun violence like we have seen in Uvalde and Buffalo, I wonder….

Is our law school doing enough? And, of course, the answer is that we always can and should do more.

Monday Morning Message 5.23.22 Changing of the Guard

“When one door closes, another door opens.” – Helen Keller

"Often when you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else." –Fred Rogers

“ …your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards.” – Bob Dylan

Now that the spring 2022 semester has been completed, I want to thank all the members of our extraordinary faculty for their dedication to our mission.

Learn Law. Live Justice. Through their tireless service to our law school, to the university, and to the community, they also serve as role models for our students.

Monday Morning Message 5.16.22 Our Most Resilient Class.

“ The Cleveland-Marshall College of Law logo says this: Learn Law. Live Justice. Learn is an action verb; so is live. They look good on a logo; it is when you embed this vision into your future that you will change the world for the better…..I urge you on this day of new beginnings for you: remember the action verbs in the mantra of this, your soon-to-be alma mater: Learn Law. Live Justice. You don’t need it to be easy. You just need it to be possible.” – CSU President Laura Bloomberg

Monday Morning Message 5.9.22 Two Stories of Opportunity

“Most people miss opportunity because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Thomas Edison

"If a window of opportunity appears, don't pull down the shade." - Tom Peters

This morning, I want to share two inspiring stories about seizing opportunities and making improbable dreams come true.

Monday Morning Message 5.2.22 Nothing is Given. Everything is Earned.

“Nothing is given. Everything is earned.” ― LeBron James

“Pressure is a privilege - it only comes to those who earn it.” – Billie Jean King

“As much as talent counts, effort counts twice.” ― Angela Duckworth

Today is the first day of final exams and they continue through May 13.

Monday Morning Message 4.25.22 Lifting As We Climb

“ Lifting as we climb, onward and upward we go, struggling and striving….. we look forward to a future large with promise and hope. Seeking no favors because of our color, nor patronage because of our needs, we knock at the bar of justice, asking an equal chance." - Mary Church Terrell, suffragist and civil rights activist; author, A Colored Woman in a White World, 1940

Every week I witness the impressive accomplishments of our students not only in the classroom but also outside the classroom through participation in our diverse, outstanding C|M|Law student organizations, publications, and events.
