Send me my Monday morning message
I rarely will write about personal matters in this Monday Morning Message, but because of something special that happened this past weekend, I want to tell a story about my parents.
“The spirit of liberty is the spirit which is not too sure that it is right; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which seeks to understand the minds of other men and women; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which weighs their interests alongside its own without bias; the spirit of liberty remembers that not even a sparrow falls to earth unheeded.” -Judge Learned Hand; Address at “I am an American” Day, Central Park, New York, May 21, 1944
When a holiday falls on Monday, I’ll send my message on Tuesday morning. Since Monday was Labor Day, this message is about the new world of labor and work.
When our son, Jason, graduated from college, we asked him the question many parents ask their children, “what do you want to do with your life?” Jason said something I never would have thought to say to my parents. He said “Mom, Dad – what I want to do hasn’t been invented yet.”
Good Morning. During orientation week for our first year class, we featured a new session on “The Future of Cleveland.” Why? Because our future is tied to Cleveland’s future. Good Morning. First and foremost, thank you for the opportunity to serve as Interim Dean. It’s an honor and a privilege.
Every Monday Morning, I will share some thoughts, and this Wednesday we will launch our new bi-weekly (every 2 weeks) e-newsletter. We’ll highlight the great work of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. And we’ll reflect not only on what we do but also on why it’s so important.
In June, the Cleveland Cavaliers ended Cleveland’s 52-year, 146 season professional sports championship drought by becoming the first professional basketball team to ever rally from a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals.
